Greenwashing and How to Identify Misleading

Consumers today are increasingly choosing products that promise to be eco-friendly, natural, and sustainable but not every green claim reflects reality. This article explores the growing problem of greenwashing, the tactics companies use to mislead consumers, and the practical steps every shopper can take to identify genuine sustainability and make informed purchasing decisions.

 By John Pallan

Introduction
The word "eco-friendly" is everywhere now. We see it on bottles, clothes, food packets and ads. Companies say their products are "green" "natural" "sustainable”. Not every green claim is true. Companies try to market their products in a way that makes them look good. Sometimes companies pretend to care about the environment just to sell products. This is called Greenwashing.
Greenwashing means companies make people think they are better for the environment than they really are. The goal is simple: look good earn trust and make money without changing harmful practices. In this situation no one does anything against it. Even the people in charge remain helpless.
In this article we will understand what Greenwashing is, why companies do it tricks they use and how you can identify misleading claims as a smart consumer.

What is Greenwashing?
The word Greenwashing comes from "green" and "whitewashing". Whitewashing means hiding the truth. Greenwashing is when companies pretend to care about the environment just to sell products and look good in front of people even though their real actions are not eco-friendly at all. Today every brand wants to look "green" because customers prefer buying from companies that seem to protect nature. So, of making real changes in how they make products many companies just change their ads and packaging. They use words like "natural" "eco- "green" and "sustainable" without giving any proof. Sometimes they highlight one good thing like "made with recycled paper" but hide the fact that the whole product is still causing a lot of pollution. Times they use fake labels with leaves and earth pictures or they make claims that sound big but mean nothing like "chemical-free" on products where chemicals are already banned. Even celebrities become a part of this. This tricks people into thinking they are helping the planet by buying those products.
To identify Greenwashing, you should always look for details and proof. Real eco-friendly companies will tell you numbers like "made with 70% recycled material" and they will have proper certificates from trusted organizations like FSC, USDA Organic or Energy Star. If a company only talks about one feature but ignores all the other harmful things they do that is a warning sign. Also, if you cannot find any data, reports or proof from groups to support their claim then it is probably misleading. As a consumer you should search the company on Google read beyond the label and check if the brand is green in its full process. From making to packaging to waste. The best way to fight Greenwashing is to not get fooled by ads. The best choice is always to reduce what you buy reuse what you have and support brands that show action, not just green words. In the end don’t trust the color green on a packet. Trust the truth and proof behind it.
Greenwashing is hiding actions and showing only the good ones to look environmentally responsible.
Example: A plastic bottle company says "100% recyclable" in letters but does not tell you that only 9% of plastic actually gets recycled. A fast fashion brand launches one "organic cotton" t-shirt line but 95% of its clothes are still made in polluting factories.
It is not always a lie. Sometimes it is truth, confusing words or small good actions used to hide big bad actions.

Why Do Companies Do Greenwashing?
1.      Customer Demand: People today prefer brands that care about the planet.
2.      Especially young people.
3. Brand Image: Being "green" makes a company look modern and responsible.
4. Avoid Rules: By showing green steps companies can avoid strict  government laws.
5. Make Profit: "Eco" products are often sold at higher prices.
6.Instead of changing the whole business some companies just change the marketing.

7 Common Greenwashing Tricks to Watch For
Here are the ways companies mislead us:
1. The Vague Claim
Words like "natural" "eco”, "green" "clean" with no proof.
Example: "This is a cleaner”. But natural does not mean safe or non-toxic.
2. The Hidden Trade-off
One green feature is highlighted to hide harmful ones.
Example: "Made with paper" on a product that uses tons of plastic and fuel to
ship.
3. The Irrelevant Claim
Saying something that's true but not helpful.
Example: "CFC-free" on a product. CFCs have been banned for 30 years.
Every product is CFC-free.
4. The Lesser of Two Evils
Calling something "when the whole category is bad.
Example: "Eco- cigarettes". Cigarettes are still harmful.
5. The Fake Label
Using images of leaves, earth or fake certification stamps that look official but
are made up by the company.
6. No Proof / Unverifiable
Claims like "43% better for the environment" but no data, study or source is
given.
7. The Fib of Omission
Telling part of the story.
Example: An oil company advertises projects but does not mention it still
causes 90% of its pollution from oil drilling.

How to Identify Misleading Green Claims
You don’t need to be a scientist. Just ask these 5 questions:
1. Is the claim specific?
Good: "Made with 70% recycled plastic"
Bad: "Eco-friendly product"
Look for numbers, percentages and certificates.
2. Can you check the proof?

Green brands show reports third-party certificates or website links.
Look for trusted labels like: FSC, USDA Organic, Energy Star, B Corp,
Fairtrade.
3. Is it the product or just one part?
Check if the company is green in packaging, manufacturing and waste. Not in
one ingredient.
4. Who said it?
If the claim is on the company’s ad and nowhere else be careful. Search for
news articles or NGO reports about that company.
5. Does it sound too good to be true?
If a product claims it solves climate change but costs the same and does the
thing it probably doesn’t.
Real Life Examples
- Car Company: Advertises one car model but 80% of its sales are still petrol
and diesel cars.
- Cosmetic Brand: Says "cruelty-free" but tests on animals in countries where
it is required by law.
- Food Brand: Puts a picture of farms and cows on milk packet but sources
milk from factory farms.

What Can You Do as a Consumer?
1. Read beyond the label. Check the ingredients and small print.
2. Google the company. Search "company. Greenwashing" or "company name
+ pollution".
3. Support sustainable brands. Small local brands often do more than ads.
4.. Reuse first. The greenest product is the one you don’t buy.
5. Report claims. In countries you can complain to consumer forums if an ad
is misleading.

Why Greenwashing is Dangerous

Greenwashing is dangerous because it misleads people who actually want to help the environment. When a person buys a product thinking it is good for nature they feel they have done their part. If that product is not really sustainable then both money and effort are wasted. This also creates confusion because real eco-friendly companies who are doing work get lost in the crowd of fake claims. Greenwashing slows down real climate action because companies feel they can just use words instead of reducing pollution saving water or treating workers fairly. Over time people start losing trust in all "products, even the genuine ones. So, Greenwashing does not just harm the planet it also harms businesses and conscious consumers.

Common Industries That Use Greenwashing

Many industries use Greenwashing to improve their image. Fashion brands launch one " cotton" collection and call themselves sustainable while 90% of their clothes are made in factories that waste water and use child labor. Oil and gas companies spend millions on ads showing trees and solar panels. Most of their business still comes from fossil fuels that cause climate change. Food companies put pictures of farms and green fields on packets. The food is full of plastic packaging and chemicals. Cosmetic brands write "natural" and "chemical-free" on bottles. Do not explain what that means. Even banks and investment firms say they are "green" because they fund one renewable project while funding many coal and oil projects at the same time. This shows Greenwashing is everywhere. We have to be alert.

How to Be a Smart Consumer and Stop Greenwashing

You can be a consumer by being careful and doing your research. Check the company’s claims. Look for proof. Do not just trust the words on the label. Check if the company is really making changes or just using words. Support companies that are really trying to help the environment. Do not buy products just because they say they are "green". Read beyond the label and check the ingredients and small print. Google the company. Search for news articles or NGO reports, about that company. Report claims and supports real sustainable brands. By being a consumer, you can help stop Greenwashing and support companies that are really trying to help the environment.

The best way to stop companies from pretending to be environmentally friendly which is called greenwashing is to become a careful buyer. First do not believe the words on the front of a package. Turn it around. Read what is inside what it is made of and what the company says about itself. Second look for proof like certificates from other companies reports from auditors and clear information. Third research the company online. If a company is truly helping the environment, other organizations and news websites will also talk about it. Fourth ask questions: Where is this product made? How waste does it create? Is the whole company helping the environment or one product? Finally remember that buying less is better than buying something that says it is "green". Using things again fixing them and choosing products from companies often helps the planet more than buying a new "eco" product that comes from another country. When we stop falling for greenwashing companies will be forced to make changes instead of just making green ads.

Companies use greenwashing because they understand how people think and feel. Most people feel bad about pollution and climate change. They do not have time to research every product. So, when they see a picture of a leaf or the word "natural" or an ad with rivers and trees they quickly think "this is a good company". Companies use this feeling to sell products. They know that people will pay more for something that says "eco-friendly" even if there is no difference. This is called paying extra for something just because it says it is good for the environment. Greenwashing works because it gives us a way to feel like we are doing something good without changing our lifestyle. The truth is, really caring for nature is not about feeling good it is about doing better. That needs us to be honest with ourselves not just believe what companies say.

There is a difference between greenwashing and real sustainability. A company that is really helping the environment will be transparent and honest. They will talk about their problems not just their successes. They will have goals like "reduce carbon by 50% by 2030" and publish reports every year to show how they are doing. Their efforts to help the environment will be in every part of their business. From the factory to delivery to packaging. On the hand a company that is just pretending to be green will only show one small project use confusing words and avoid giving information. Real companies that care about the environment get certified by organizations. Companies that are greenwashing make their fake certificates. If you compare both real sustainability feels honest and simple while greenwashing feels flashy and too perfect.

The government and media also have a role in stopping greenwashing. The government should make rules that companies cannot use words like "eco-friendly" or "carbon neutral" without proof. There should be fines for false ads. Many countries are now making laws to stop companies from making environmental claims. The media and influencers also need to be responsible. They should not promote every "product without checking the facts. Schools and colleges should teach students how to identify environmental claims. When the government, media and consumers all work together greenwashing becomes risky for companies. Then companies will understand that it is cheaper to help the environment than to just pretend to be green.

Here are some ways companies pretend to be green:
1.      Using pictures of waterfalls, forests and animals to create a "nature feeling"
without doing anything
2. Using words to confuse customers.
3. Saying something is made with a percentage of recycled material and
making it sound like a big deal.
4. Promising to do something in the future but not having a plan for now.
5. Partnering with an organization that helps the environment and advertising
it everywhere to make themselves look good.

Conclusion
Greenwashing works because we want to believe that companies are helping the planet. Wanting to help is not enough. The fight against climate change and pollution needs action not just ads that say a company is green. As buyers the money we spend is like a vote. When we learn to spot greenwashing, we push companies to be truly better not look better.
Remember this rule: Do not trust a company just because it says it is green. Trust the proof that it is really helping the environment.
