Order of the Supreme Court of India regarding wetland conservation in India, 08/02/2017

Order of the Supreme Court of India in the matter of M. K. Balakrishnan & Others Vs Union of India & Others dated 08/02/2017 regarding wetland conservation in India. Supreme Court orders that the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2016 should be notified on or before 30th June, 2017.

Apex Court's attention was drawn to the affidavit filed by the Union of India which contains an Information Brochure “National Wetland Inventory & Assessment”. This Brochure indicates on page 11 thereof that 2,01,503 wetlands have been mapped at 1:50,000 scale. Court directs that the 'Brief Documents' with regard to these 2,01,503 

wetlands should be obtained by the Union of India from the respective State Governments.

Order of the Supreme Court of India in the matter of M. K. Balakrishnan & Others Vs Union of India & Others dated 31/01/2017 regarding wetland conservation in India.

Apex Court wants to whether the Draft Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2016 which were said to have been circulated some time in March, 2016 have been finalized or not and, if not, reasons for the delay. Supreme Court also asks the Union of India to specify the steps taken to preserve the 26 wetlands covered by the Ramsar Convention, 1971.
